One
full day runs for 24 hours and recycles. These 24 hours are divided into two
equal halves each of 12 hours duration. The intention is that whatever you
could not achieve in the daytime, you have equal length of time to achieve at
night. This is the major reason why there are daytime and nocturnal creatures;
so that no one would feel cheated. While some
creatures are nocturnal-active
only at nights, humans choose to be diurnal, being more active at daytime and
reserving the night for a period of rest and reinforcement.
But
is night actually a period of rest? As George Nwosu would always put it : “Today’s actions are
always planned a night before or the plan is revisited a night before.” This
implies that night is a period of preparation, reinforcement and a little of
rest-considering the human sense of functionality. What you do a night before
goes a long way to determining how you work the following day and how much you
achieve that day. Below are four ways to get the best out of your night and
keep yourself working smoothly and efficiently for the day.
- Get Yourself Ready for the Night
As
I earlier implied, night is not actually a period of rest as generally
perceived. An achiever sees night as a time for groundwork and reinforcement, a
time to check the journey so far. So if that is the case, you have to start
your night by getting yourself ready for it. The way you get yourself ready for
the day’s activities is the same way you get yourself ready for your night’s
tasks. Your night starts the moment you get home, after your day’s work is
over. Take a shower to wash off the stress accumulated over the day. Nothing
relaxes the body system like a cold or warm shower. Take your dinner as early as
possible; avoid having late dinner. This would give your body system enough
time to digest before the organs relax for the night. Early digestion also
gives way for mental alertness. It’s also necessary you give yourself a short
time to unwind after taking your dinner.
- Analyze and Measure your Task Achievements for the Day over your Expected Output
When
you form the habit of organizing the tasks you need to achieve in a day, it is
always necessary to analyze those expected achievements of yours at night and
measure the output over the expected result. This would give you the accountability
of things done and tasks left unexecuted- and you can start making plans on how
to finish up the tasks if they are still relevant. When you measure out the tasks you intend to
achieve for the day and you could get at least 80%, you were efficient for the
day indeed! The remaining 20% will automatically add to your tasks the next day
unless their time limit for execution has been exceeded. And this is why you
must work according to priorities.
- Write out your To-Do-List for the Next Day
To
get yourself organized for the next day, it’s indispensible you write out the
lists of tasks you need to achieve according to their level of precedence. Most
people actually find it time-consuming to do this while those who do the same
routine of work every day do not find it necessary to prepare their
to-do-lists. They could just sprint into the day and act haphazardly on tasks
as they come. Such attitude is inappropriate for entrepreneurs, business persons
and managers who are saddled with complex daily tasks and challenges. If you
cannot get yourself organized by preparing your to- do-list, you will have many
things unaccomplished at the end of every day; and that means you are already
failing for the day as an adage has it that if you fail to plan, you plan to
fail.
- Give Yourself Enough Time for Relaxation
Because
humans are naturally diurnal, we work more in the day and work less at nights
except for programmers, bloggers, writers, architects and designers who work
best at nights when there are little or no distractions. Humans are similar to
mobile devices. Our energy is used up over a period of time and we are left
drained and in need of strength. The only way to regain our strength is through
relaxation, rest and sleep. The nature
and length of our relaxation and sleep varies from person to person. Whichever
way you choose to relax, ensure it is reasonably enough and psychologically satisfactory
for your health. Sleep is very essential as it is the only way through which
your body organs observe their own relaxation and get ready for work the next
day.
Though
social media has automatically distorted the length and quality of our sleep, National Sleep Foundation recommends an average of 6-9 hours for a normal adult to
sleep at night and wake up early so as to be productive the next day. It’s not
just about the quantity of sleep but the quality of your sleep. Remember that
sleeping is a critical factor that determines the degree of your mental alertness,
physical strength and emotional readiness. So if you get tired and dull when
you wake up in the morning, adjust your sleeping period. Don’t over-sleep and
never under-sleep!
